The rollback on jantri rates has been welcomed by land developers and builders as well as the Opposition Congress, which claimed the government had given in to public sentiment.
Realtors had on Monday held a meeting with a group of three ministers in Gandhinagar seeking a rollback while the Congress had submitted a memorandum in collector’s office protesting the hike across the state, even as property registrations had come to near halt in the state from April 1.
Suresh Patel, president of Gujarat Institute of Housing & Estate Developers (GIHED), said, “We welcome the concession in jantri rates announced by the state government on Thursday. We will end our movement now but will formally announce our detailed view in a day or two.”
Jaxsay Shah, president of Gujarat chapter of Confederation of Real Estate Developer’s Associations of India (CREDAI) and a former president of GIHED, called it a “very mature decision by the government and we welcome it”. “Reduction of jantri rates and premium rates will benefit all sections of society. Reduction in premium rates on land conversion will benefit farmers. We have called off our movement against new jantri rates now,” he said.
State Congress president Arjun Modhwadia claimed it was his party that forced the government to cave in. “Congress workers organised protests in 224 talukas and all important places. They even beat up our workers. We demand more concession on jantri rates,” he said.
