The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set a record by recovering property tax of Rs400 crore till March 3. More tax is likely to be collected in the remaining days of the current financial year. The civic body had collected Rs108.99 crore in property tax in fiscal 2000-01. Within a decade, property tax has crossed the Rs400-crore mark.
Deputy municipal commissioner and tax collection department incharge, Vilas Kanade, in a statement, said property holders in the city, who have not yet paid the property tax, should do so by March 31 to avoid penalty of 2% per month.
He said property tax collection in this financial year is the highest ever in the history of the PMC, aided by sealing of closed properties and attaching properties where tax was due.Meanwhile, the general body (GB) meeting of the PMC, called to discuss civic budget of 2011-12 was adjourned on Thursday for want of quorum.
Deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap, who was in the chair, asked municipal secretary Sunil Parkhi to carry out a headcount of the members presents 20 minutes after the meeting started. Parkhi declared that there were only 48 corporators present in the house while the required minimum number is 49. The house was adjourned without discussion till Monday.
Outgoing standing committee chairman Arvind Shinde had presented the civic budget recently. When the meeting started, there were 10 members in the house. There are 144 elected members of the PMC, while five of them are co-opted.
Only group leader of the Nationalist Congress Party and leader of house, Nilesh Nikam, was present.
